Artist's Way Check-In

I have finally gotten into the habit of writing three pages in the morning. At first, it was arduous and I did not look forward to doing the work. It took nearly an hour in the beginning to write those pages. I think that the "unblocking" feature Cameron describes is part of what I look forward to, as I am not the most voluminous drafter at all. I appreciate that now three pages takes about 20 minutes, unless I get distracted. The distractions include a phone and a cat who likes to maul me. The former I can control. The latter will scream bloody murder if I try to keep him in one place. This is an ongoing saga and we shall see how it unfolds.

I have read through the second week of The Artist's Way. Next week I hope to read a couple more and do more of the exercises included. I appreciated the mantra exercise. Seeing oneself as an artist is certainly a practice, and it is not something someone becomes good at overnight.

Part of the art I am developing is my art of leadership. This comes out as I lead Diaspora Morning Prayer online and teach Sunday School. In the former, each service or series involves quite a bit of creativity to draw together individuals who have been scattered and share space with them. In the latter, teaching theatre games both as spirituality and as preparation for our own "performances" on Children's Sunday and at the Christmas Pageant involves my own preparation to lead and engage the kids. I do not tell them that this is spirituality or preparation. We just do it. It's play, and kids know how to play without needing wordy theologies of play. How do I translate this to adults and decision-makers? Hopefully Boal will help with that.
